International Health

What is international health?

International Health is an umbrella term that encompasses many factors that impact health within the context of low and middle income countries. These include:

• Global burden of disease (diseases with significant penetration with high societal cost)
• Social determinants of health
• Basic health interventions and services (such as immunizations, communicable disease control, essential drugs, laboratory diagnosis)
• Maternal and child health
• Family planning and population programs
• Cross-cultural training
• Travel medicine
• Response to international disaster
• Medical ethics

For a more detailed description of how the University of Alberta examines these issues, please see this link to the Division of Community Engagement.

International Health Events

The scheduling of events varies by year, so check out the MSA Calendar here to stay up to date!

International Electives

Students can participate in electives abroad through the Faculty of Community Engagement, CFMS, or electives set up by the individual student. To learn more, please read the information on our international electives here.

Global Health Rounds

Every Monday at noon, the Division of Community Engagement organizes a speaker to present on global health topics and research. This year, we hope to include presentations from students who have completed international electives. More information on speakers and location will be provided in the fall.

Rich Man Poor Man Dinner

This is an annual fundraiser jointly hosted by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta to raise funds for global health initiatives. At each table of 10, one person receives a steak dinner while the remaining 9 receive simple perogies, symbolizing the 90/10 disparity between the world's richest and poorest people.

Global Health Fair

This full day event, organized by the Division of Community Engagement and the Biomedical Global Health Research Network, explores topics in global health, with sessions ranging from biomedical science to clinical practice. Come and hear about new and exciting research in the field. Chat with students about the insights they gained during international electives. This is an opportunity for students who completed international electives to share their experiences with other medical students. Attend the keynote presentation. Gain a world of knowledge in one day!

Global Health Silent Photo Auction

Peruse photos captured by medical students while abroad on international electives and bid on your favourite photo for a chance to take it home! Proceeds go to charity. In 2017, the silent auction was held in conjunction with Global Health Awareness Week.

University of Alberta International Week!

Every year, the Community Engagement Team puts together several sessions about Global Health to coincide with the University of Alberta's International Week and the Division of Community Engagement and Biomedical Global Health Research Network Annual Global Health Fair. Members of the Community Engagement Team will share further details with you as they become available.
