Fundraising and Charitable Efforts
The Affair of the Heart
This initiative is developed and maintained by first and second year medical students to raise money for an Alberta based charity each year. The gala is open to all ages and will feature a catered dinner, fashion show, entertainment, and silent auction. The evening is a great way to meet other students and faculty as well as support a very worthy cause!

Since the first Run Without Borders in Calgary, the race has since spread to Edmonton, Halifax and Newfoundland. All funds collected through this race will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders (DWB).

1 in 3600 children born in Canada each year are diagnosed with the genetic disorder known as cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults, at present there is no cure. Shinerama is a nationwide fundraising event that raises crucial funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis Canada via the generous fundraising efforts of university students from all faculties. Students from the UofA set out across Edmonton carrying out good deeds in exchange for donations on the major fundraising day known as “Shine Day”. There are also many intermittent fundraisers over the summer, ex) bottle drives.
Shine Day this year is Saturday September 9th! We need your help, come join

Outrun the Stigma
Outrun the Stigma is the largest student initiated mental health awareness run in Western Canada. Started in 2012 by a passionate group of University of Calgary students, Outrun the Stigma works to raise money for local mental health charities and organizations including Distress Centre Calgary while breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health.
Since 2013, we have brought together more than 1,600 students, community members, and volunteers every year to raise over $44,000 for Distress Centre Calgary.
In May 2016 our student club initiative transitioned to a not-for-profit organization with the goal of expanding our online platform and hosting our annual event in cities and communities across Canada. Our goal is to reduce mental health stigma by hosting annual Outrun the Stigma event runs and hosting an online story sharing platform. We started in Calgary, now with chapters in Edmonton and Toronto, and we will expand throughout Canada in the coming years.
How you can help:
- Become an OTS ambassador and support the local Edmonton chapter throughout the year with fundraising efforts
- Become an OTS volunteer for the Edmonton run (happening on October 15 this year!)
- Share your mental health experience with us on our story sharing platform
- … and many more ways!
Our story sharing platform can be accessed here: http://www.outrunthestigma.ca/stories/
