High School & Post-Secondary Outreach
The MD Ambassador’s High School/Post-Secondary Committee’s objective is to represent the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry within the high school and post-secondary community. Members will promote medicine as a career to high school and post-secondary students, focusing on local schools. Some activities involve organizing open house, outreach presentations to foster interest in medicine at high schools, and hosting information sessions to post-secondary students of all disciplines to better understand the admissions process.
Health Career Camp – August 16th or 17th, 2017 – presenting three interactive, hands-on activities introducing medicine to high-school students interested in pursuing a vocation within medicine. In the past, this has including eye, ear and throat examinations in the Zeidler-Ledcor building.
Open House 2017 – Saturday, October 21st, 2017 from 9am – 4pm. An interactive booth set-up to answer questions pertaining to pursing medicine for high school students, university students, and their parents.
High-school presentations – Throughout the year – MD high-school ambassadors travel to high-schools across Edmonton to present the basics on the medical school admission process, including MCAT preparation, courses taken during high-school and university, and answering any questions students and teachers have pertaining to medical school.
Upcoming New Events:
Online, podcast series – throughout the 2017/2018 – A series of online podcasts will be produced by MD Post-Secondary Ambassadors, covering a range of topics for prospective medical school applicants. This series of podcasts is set to cover topics such as MCAT preparation, personal activities, how to apply to medical school, an explanation of what students can expect during the MMI interview process (although, there will be no practice question or “tips” to improve your performance), and life in medical school. Prospective applicants will have opportunities to submit questions during the podcasts and have them answered.
Generally, this series is intended to dispel the misinformation and “myths” that many medical school applicants are led to believe. You will meet real medical students and realize there are many paths to medical school, and everyone will have a unique application.
This online series will replace the in-person MD Ambassadors post-secondary program that was conducted in previous years. Our aim is to allow more engagement with a greater number of potentail applicants from the University of Alberta, and allow us to engage with students from other universities in Alberta and across Canada.
A Taste of Medicine – not held during the 2016/2017 year, but will potentially be brought back for the 2017/2018 year. Introduces a range of medical specialties to prospective medical students.
Science Fun-day, held March 11th, 2017 from 10am-4pm – Introduces medicine to Junior high and high school students, including teaching basic skills such as how to use a stethoscope and reflex hammer, and handing out informational brochures and pamphlets. Also included plastic models from the anatomy department to explain organs such as the heart in visual and simplified terms.
